As part of a commission for I collaborated with on a cosplay of Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid.
Every last detail is finally complete!! Whoo!
Most of the construction notes you can find in the progress shots, which btw, will soon be moved to scraps. In this collection of shots you can see the costume from just about all sides as well as close ups of details. Please excuse my terrible Windsor knot. I'm not very good at them. XD One picture features a rough idea of what the sleeves will look like on. There is also one that shows everything together, including the headset and indestructible leeks(they're made of pvc piping sawed in half!) made by . For more photos and a video demonstration of the headset, please visit . In the last photo you can see that the headset and the sleeves light up!!
As for final construction notes not previously discussed....
The panels were originally going to consist of remote control buttons. However, it was yet another idea that turned out to be way too expensive. My back-up plan involved thin sheets of plastic used in faux stained glass pieces. These sheets are thin enough to cut with a regular pair of scissors with ease. Using faux stained glass paints and lead lines, sections of buttons were mapped out and filled in. Since this is what part I was up to when it was time to start my work week, my bf actually made the majority of the "buttons" for me so they would be dry by the time I came home. After dry, I was able to cut each section out, following the lead lines. Using an idea similar to that of a button hole, I created openings in the panels of vinyl I had sewn together and glued the "buttons" over these openings. I weaved el wire underneath, stitching it down at every loop. In order to stretch the light source and allow it to glow more, I backed up the panel with a sheet of aluminum foil(good for reflecting light) and sealed it all up with a another layer of vinyl glued down. Each panel was connected to the sleeves with 4 snaps a piece. The wire and battery pack to the el wire light source sticking out the top, I created another large button whole in the sleeves in order to feed them into the inside of the sleeve, out the top, and with a glued on bobby pin, clipped the battery pack to the top of the sleeve where the on/off button is easily accessible.
Since I did not expect anything to be able to hold up the weight of the sleeves after the button panels were attached, I decided to sort of attach the sleeves to the shirt. I sewed on little loops to each sleeve and each shirt armhole. I took a pair of black bra straps, shortened them, and hooked them on. The straps are still adjustable and can be unhooked if desired. ^____^
I can't think of anything else at the moment. If I do I shall definitely add!
Aside from that, I'm pleased with the result of this project, despite the obstacles. I learned a lot from it and definitely tested new limits, which I love to do in each piece I work on. For a costume that didn't seem so complicated or detailed at first glance, it definitely took just as much time as many other costumes I've made in order to get every little detail right. Hopefully its new owner will be just as pleased with it when she receives it in the mail. ^_____^
hello! i reallly love this! so i was wondering if you would be able to make this again...... i might only need the skirt and and shirt and key chain.... i have a tie and armwarmers and the cube things and small details except the socks! lol well thank you! i look forward to hear from you... oh and im 13 and im like a 14 in kids if that helps....
Before the skirt was assembled and it was just a stretch of black fabric, I took a section of blue of the same length, folded it in half and gave it a long loose stitch to keep the raw ends sealed. Then I just stitched it, right sides together, to the bottom of the black fabric, this way when the skirt was assembled, the blue would also get benefit from the pleating. Hope that makes sense!
